Biography

Hiroaki Furumai has formally been part of IWA governance since 2005 as a member and from 2009 as a secretary of the IWA Japanese Committee. He was also board member of the IWA-IAHR joint Committee on Urban Drainage from 2005 till 2011, of which he currently is an associate member. IWA ASPIRE is another initiative he has been part of, namely as a member of the steering committee of the 4th ASPIRE conference in Tokyo in 2011. Currently Hiroaki Furumai is part of IWA’s Board of Directors. Hiroaki Furumai is Professor at the Research Center for Water Environment Technology Graduate School of Engineering of the University of Tokyo. Born in 1956 he became a Doctor of Engineering by the University of Tokyo in 1984. His scholarship achievements have granted him an acclaimed academic career with several prizes over the years, having published 10 books and more than 100 journal papers. He has been interested in sustainable urban water management focusing on water pollution control and water environment conservation. Hiroaki Furumai conducted research on urban nonpoint source pollution, modeling water quality dynamics, urban flood control and rainwater & reclaimed water use for urban sustainability. •1984-86 : Research Associate, Department of Civil Engineering, Tohoko University, Sendai, Japan.
