11th IWA International Symposium on Waste Management Problems in Agro-Industries

Community Organizer:

Agricultural-based industries produced the vast amount of residues every year, which are generally unexploited. Inappropriate management of these wastes has significant impacts on the environment  as well as human and animal health. The biggest challenge in agro-industrial production is scattered location, seasonal changes in waste production (varying significantly both in quantity and content) and their complexity.

Comprehensive and sustainable solutions are usually very specific and requires specialized knowledge. Big change was observed in the agricultural waste management over the past ten years, especially in in anaerobic digestion systems.

Biomass and organic wastes generated from agricultural sectors is currently suggested as a low-cost feedstock and a sustainable renewable resource for the production of value-added, carbon based products, which could be achieved by the biorefinery system.

Biorefinery is regarded as an integrated biobased facility that uses a variety of technologies to generate products such as chemicals, biofuels, food and feed ingredients, fibers, biomaterials, heat and power, tending to maximization of value-added products. Biorefinery concept is built around three pillars of sustainability i.e. environment, economy and society and is one of the key enabling strategies of the Circular Economy and contribute to the progression of water management worldwide, which is in line with the IWA Strategic Plan 2019-2024
