Biography
Xiaochang Wang is a Professor at the School of Environmental and Municipal Engineering, Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, Xi’an, China. He currently acts as Director of State International Science and Technology Cooperation Center for Urban Alternative Water Development. Having obtained a PhD in Engineering from Hokkaido University, Japan, and having worked internationally for several years before returning to China in 1998, he speaks Chinese, Japanese, and English.
He has extensive experience in the water sector, working in various fields such as engineering, research, education, and administration. From 2003 to 2014 he was Vice President of his university, and has also served for a long period as a Board member of the China Urban Water Association, and for the Water Industry Society under the China Civil Engineering Society, and as Vice Chairman of the Environmental Education Committee under the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences.
Xiaochang Wang joined the International Water Supply Association (IWSA) in 1993 and then transferred his membership to IWA when IWSA and IAWQ were merged. He has been active in IWA in the Steering Committee of Cities of the Future Program, and Alternative Water Resources (AWR) Cluster. He has widely promoted IWA activities in China and works as Chair of AWR Cluster – China Chapter. He also served in the Program Committee as a member for the IWA Lisbon Congress and Co-Chair for the IWA Brisbane Congress. He was nominated IWA Fellow in 2011 and IWA Distinguished Fellow in 2014. Since 2018 he is working in the IWA-BOD Members and Engagement Committee.
Xiaochang Wang’s early research interest was in drinking water purification and then extended to wastewater treatment and reuse. In recent years, he has been extensively engaged in research work to develop alternative water resources for sustainable urban development and water and environmental improvement. He authored 12 books or book chapters internationally and domestically, published over 260 papers in peer reviewed international journals (> 6000 citations) and about 500 papers in domestic journals (> 7000 citations). He is also serving as Co-Editor in Chief of Journal of Water Process Engineering at Elsevier. He was appointed Honorary Professor in 2019 by the University of Exeter, UK.
