Prerequisite: minimum of 5 years of experience in the field or consent of the instructor -nolascod@uci.edu. Attendees must be Engineers or Scientists with practical experience in operation and management of wastewater treatment plants and/or consulting engineering.
Through a combination of theory and case study applications, the course provides practical experience on how to apply dynamic modeling simulators to design, operate, and optimize wastewater treatment plants. Particular emphasis is placed on turning plants into water resource recovery facilities by generating energy, fertilizers, and water for reuse. During the course, participants will have full-time access to a dynamic simulator, so they can implement themselves strategies and evaluate their operational costs. Energy savings and generation of electricity with biogas receive particular attention. Modeling calibration techniques are taught and implemented to achieve effluent quality standards.
The main driving force for participants to enroll in this course should be their intention to apply at work advanced modeling tools combined with field evaluation techniques with the purpose to optimize process design/upgrades, reduce energy consumption, and/or increase energy generation, while improving effluent quality.
