Reflections on the 2024 Toronto World Water Camp
The 2024 Toronto World Water Camp was an experience like no other. Bringing together Young Water Professionals (YWPs) from across the globe, the camp, held from August 11–15 alongside the International Water Association’s World Water Congress & Exhibition, was a vibrant celebration of knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and inspiration. For many participants, it was a turning point in their journey toward building a sustainable future for global water systems. Together, the organising team turned challenges into opportunities to deliver an unforgettable experience for the participants.
Programme Highlights
One of the most memorable aspects of the camp was the depth of learning it offered. The interactive workshops, such as one on wastewater-based epidemiology, showcased the direct connection between water quality and public health. This session not only broadened participants’ understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also gave them actionable insights into real-world applications of water science. Similarly, a career-focused panel offered participants an exclusive look into diverse paths within the water sector, from consulting and academia to government roles.
These sessions left a lasting impact on both seasoned and aspiring professionals, and the hands-on experiences were equally impactful. A field trip to London, Ontario (Canada), became a standout feature of the camp, where participants toured Western University’s water research institute and Trojan UV technologies. Seeing these advanced facilities in action reinforced theoretical knowledge and provided tangible examples of innovative solutions to global water challenges.
Beyond the technical learning, the camp was a melting pot of cultural and social exchanges. Each morning began with ‘Philosopher’s Hour’, a reflective session over breakfast that encouraged participants to set intentions for the day and engage in meaningful dialogue. The evenings were equally engaging with events like the YWP Social Night and a beach outing fostering connections that went beyond professional networking. These moments of camaraderie created a sense of belonging that many participants carried with them beyond the camp. A notable element of the programme was its integration of Indigenous perspectives. Hosted on the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the camp acknowledged the deep connections between Indigenous communities and water stewardship. This focus underscored the importance of inclusivity and respect in shaping the future of global water management. The participants were also core for the impactful camp. They brought their insights and perspectives, and above all fostered an environment of sharing, trust, support, respect, and a desire to learn and grow which was fundamental to the camp being such a meaningful experience.
Reflections on Success
The camp empowered attendees to not only learn from experts but also to share their unique perspectives, fostering a spirit of collaboration. The diversity of participants, sessions, and experiences created a space where innovation could thrive. The process of organising the camp offered valuable lessons. Navigating funding challenges and logistical complexities required adaptability, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to the vision. It was a testament to the power of teamwork and shared purpose.
The Ripple Effect
As the torch is passed to Glasgow for the 2026 World Water Camp, the legacy of the 2024 edition lives on in the connections formed, the knowledge shared, and the collective determination to address global water challenges. To all who participated, organised, and supported this event: thank you for making it a transformative experience. This is just the beginning. The ripples created by the 2024 Toronto World Water Camp will undoubtedly grow into waves of change, driven by the passion and dedication of young water professionals worldwide.
