Since 2000, Ulrike Kelm has been involved in communications management in the various settings of the international water sector working for the public and private sector, for the German development cooperation sector, the United Nations, and for membership based non-for-profit organisations. She started off at the GIZ for the German Government hosted International Conference on Freshwater, and was involved in the German participation in the World Summit on Sustainable Development. She later joined the Mexican National Water Commission (CONAGUA) which hosted the 4th World Water Forum, was consultant for German development cooperation projects and worked for the United Nations Water Decade Office (UNDEAS)/UN-Water, and for AquaFed, the International Federation for Private Water Operators. She joined the IWA in summer 2018 as Communications Manager.
Being a German national she has lived and worked in developed and developing countries in Europe, Latin America and the MENA region. Her academic background is equivalent to a Master’s degree in international relations (Diplom Regionalwissenschaften) from the Unversität zu Köln in Germany, with an additional Executive Master of Science in Communication Management from the Universitá della Svizzera italiana in Lugano, Switzerland.
