Biography
Prof. (Dr.) S. MOHAN is currently the Vice Chancellor, Puducherry Technological University, Puducherry (since Dec 2021) under deputation from Indian Institute of Technology Madras where he serves as Institute Chair Professor in the Environmental & Water Resources Engineering Division of the Department of Civil Engineering, Chennai. He also serving as the Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras and he served as the Head, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras, Chennai. He completed his Bachelor of Engineering from Thiyagarajar College in Madurai (1981) and obtained his M.E. in Water Engineering (1983) and Ph.D. in Water and Environmental Engineering (1987), and became a faculty member of IIT Madras in 1987. As of November 2022 he has published over 250 research articles & technical reports on several topics of environmental and water resources engineering and science, including water and wastewater treatment technologies, environmental nanotechnology, environmental impact assessment, water and air quality modeling, contaminant transport in surface & subsurface water systems, sustainability engineering, reservoir operation, water resources optimization, waste-to-energy, waste-to-materials, and solid waste management. The h – index and the citation index are 22 and 1744, respectively as of November 2022. He is recipient of several publication awards or recognition including Col. Penny Cuick Eminent Engineer Award, Institution of Engineers Medal, Indian Water Works Association (IWWA) Award, etc., His name has been listed in the World’s top 2% scientists working in the field of Environmental Engineering published by Stanford University, consecutively for the last three years Sept. 2020, Nov. 2021, & October 2022.
Professor Mohan has a teaching and research experience of 35 years and he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow of Cornell University, Ithaca, Newyork, USA. He was also the visiting Researcher at the University of Illinois, Chicago, Bradley University, USA, Loughborough University, UK, Ruhr Universitat, Bochum, Germany, and INSA, Lyon, France.
Prof. Mohan served as the Chairman, State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC), Tamil Nadu State from Nov. 2018 to Oct 2021 and currently serving as an Independent Director of Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation Ltd. (SIDCO) Government of Tamil Nadu. He was also conferred with more than 21 awards for his outstanding contributions in the area of Environmental and water Resources Engineering as well as to the Engineering Education. He has also carried out around 25 National & International Sponsored Research Projects and 126 National projects. He also served as the Director NITTTR Chennai from 2009-2014.
Prof. Mohan has served as the Chair-person of the International Water Association (IWA)- India for the period (Oct.2018 – Sept. 2022) and also served as a member of the Members Engagement Committee (MEC) of IWA.
