László Somlyódy
President: 2004-2006

László Somlyódy is Professor Emeritus at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics where he served as Professor and Head of the Department of Water Utility and Environmental Engineering. Throughout his career he received numerous honours and was awarded the Hungarian Cross of Merit for his outstanding contributions to science.

László Somlyódy is an internationally recognised expert in wastewater engineering and an Ordinary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He was the Director General of the Scientific Research Institute for Water Management (VITUKI) where he had worked for over 20 years on pioneering research in water quality using mathematical models of pollutants in surface waters. A widely published academic, László Somlyódy is author or co-author of more than 150 scientific publications and served on several international scientific committees.

László Somlyódy was Vice-President of International Water Quality Association (IWQA) and later became Vice-President of the newly-formed International Water Services Association (IWA). For several years he was also Chairman of the IWA Strategic Council. In 2004 László Somlyódy was elected President of IWA.
