His major research interests are small-scale water and wastewater treatment; sludge management and treatment technologies; water quality security theory & technology and sustainable water cycle theory & technology.

Severed as Vice Chair of Small Water and Wastewater Systems Specialist Group and Secretary (Vice Chair) of Sludge Management Specialist Group. He has made his efforts in many activities in these field.

He has accumulated rich experience in international academic works, such as severed as editor of Water Science and Technology and Water Supply, and referee for several international scientific journals.

He has also invented a small-scale low-carbon & environment friendly wastewater treatment process which was honoured the 2012 IWA Project Innovation Awards of Global Honour Award–Small Projects and has been applied in many demonstration projects. He has obtained 17 national invention patents and published over 100 papers.
