Aeration control in activated sludge systems: from concept to practice

IWA Instrumentation, Control and Automation

Target Audience

Practitioners, researchers, consultants, control software developers, plant managers/operators of WRRF.

Description

Energy consumption used for aeration in sewage treatment accounts for up to 50% of the total energy demand of the water resource recovery facility (WRRF). Aeration control provides the most direct solution in energy saving. An efficient aeration control structure will also improve the nutrient removal performance in a plant. Due to the complexity of the wastewater treatment system, selection and implementation of adequate aeration control structures is a complex task. If the design and implementation are not carried adequately, the potential for optimisation is often reduced considerably. This webinar aims to:
1. Provide an overview of commonly used control structures for aeration control in WRRF;
2. Explain different methodologies that can be used for aeration system design and control system pre-selection; and
3. Clarify the limitations of full-scale implementation of pre-selected control structures.

Learning Objectives

• Gain an overview of existing control structures for aeration control in WRRF.
• Gain an overview of different methodologies for aeration system design and control system pre-selection.
• Understand the main problems and limitations of full-scale implementation of control structures.
