Climate-Smart Utility Case Story
Like many other African countries, Kenya also suffers from the effect of the global climate pandemic, yet water utilities in the event of these challenges are expected to supply water in both good quality and quantity. As one of the service providers in Kenya, Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company ltd (KIWASCO) is licensed to provide water and sanitation services in Kisumu city. Considering the utility’s major sources of water are threatened by the effects of climate change and other anthropogenic activities that continue to hamper its operations, several adaptation actions have been put in place to ensure constant supply to consumers. Key actions include the use of nature-based solutions, water rationing and construction of barriers in the likely events of floods.
A unique innovation is the implementation of the SaniWise toilet Initiative which has curbed the plastic and waste pollution from the low-income areas that end up in the intake and has been one of the biggest to the utility and considering sewer coverage is only at 18%. This approach demonstrates a commitment to circular economy principles, where waste is transformed into valuable resources.
KIWASCO believes that the world is changing rapidly, necessitating the need for everyone to adapt, with each sector playing a role based on their unique skills. With their employers as their most valuable assets, they are devoted to investing in and empowering them to achieve the best possible operations.
