14th IWA Specialist Group for Instrumentation, Control, and Automation (ICA)

Local Organizer: IWA Norway, Norwegian University of Life Sciences
Community Organizer:

ICA has been an active area in the water industry and within the IWA since the 1970’s. The ICA conference series has always been a milestone in moving the water industry towards more efficient and more robust operation and improved water quality. With the rapid development in the Internet of Things (IoT), digital transformation of the industry, and the expanded use of devices and applications, there are exponential increases in data creation and availability. The potential and challenges associated with ICA are greater than ever.

ICA2024 will provide an international forum to exchange knowledge, methodologies, and experience on all aspects of ICA for water/ wastewater treatment and transport. Specific topics of the conference will include but not limited to sensors and instrumentation systems, online monitoring and control, modelling and simulation, early warning, information systems, decision support, risk assessment, big data, internet of things and smart water systems.

Oslo is in many ways an exotic venue even for experienced travellers. Located in the far North,
associated with Viking traditions in an ultramodern city landscape, it provides opportunities
to explore and get in love with the city, its’ people, traditions and showcasing the latest applications
on ICA in full-scale facilities. Even the water utilities represent uniqueness by fully underground built, and most cities with fully modelled and remotely controlled water and wastewater transport networks give ample possibilities to experience the innovations in practice. The conference will demonstrate the harmony between the universities, city authorities, water utilities, industries around the ICA with remarkable international collaborations.

Topics

  • Innovations in water utility management: leakage, stormwater/CSO management, greener utilities
  • Innovations in process surveillance: physical, virtual and hybrid sensors
  • Innovations in process control: making water utilities and services smarter
  • ICA in managing natural and man-made process disruptions: early warning, decision support, cyber security etc
  • ICA for improved services for stakeholders and their increased involvement: citizen science etc
