Climate-Smart Utility Case Story
The Baguio Water District (BWD) has been recognised nationally and internationally as one of the leading water utilities in the northern part of the country, Over the years, the utility has been working continuously to adapt to the changing climate by adopting initiatives that will align them with the international water community. Baguio Water believes that adopting climate change solutions is one of its strategies with the end-goal of sustainable water supply development and water security. Formulating climate change initiatives will make Baguio Water District address the ill-effects of these weather patterns thus efficiency is assured insofar as operation is concerned.
Through several projects for climate change adaptation and mitigation such as rainwater harvesting facilities, aquifer recharging schemes, reforestation, construction of green infrastructures, and several non-revenue water reduction projects and programs BWD will not feel the brunt of severe effects of the changes in the environment. Additional initiatives are expected to be implemented to enhance climate resilience and guarantee that future generations will continue to enjoy a sufficient supply of safe and drinkable water. Through these projects, BWD also contributes to the sustainable reduction of carbon emissions through the different existing initiatives. This approach safeguards, both water and ambient air quality. To support leadership, the utility also educates the public of the potential ill-effects of irreversible climate change in water supply through their Information education campaign (IEC).
