A publication and a set of tools have been released as outcomes of IWA’s project on Public Participation in the Regulation of Urban Water Services.
‘Guidelines for Public Participation in the Regulation of Urban Water Services’ looks at the benefits and risks of public participation as well outlining a new framework that aims to serve as a baseline for practitioners when assessing the associated benefits and risks of a public participation approach to regulating urban water services.
Goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals recognises public participation as an important means of implementation to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
Recognising the importance of defining and examining the meaning of public participation as a concept, IWA ran this project on ‘Public Participation in the Regulation of Urban Water Services‘ which looked into the use of public participation within the decision making process of setting tariffs and prices for the provision of water services.
